A data breach occurs when personal information is accessed, disclosed, lost, or stolen without authorization. This can happen through:

  • Cyber attacks or hacking
  • Lost or stolen devices containing data
  • Accidental disclosure (e.g., email to wrong recipient)
  • Unauthorized access by employees
  • System errors or technical failures

Not all breaches require notification

Under Australian law, we only need to notify you if a breach is "likely to result in serious harm". This includes situations where:

  • Sensitive information (like financial details) is exposed
  • There's a real risk of identity theft or fraud
  • The information could be used to cause you harm
